DURING A BREAK, A MUCH NEEDED STRETCH

IN EARLY MORNING, A SLEEPY START

The large musical organization on campus had an*
olher fruitful year. With a great Heal of new talent and
an exjierieneed core of returning musicians. the\ present-
ed several musical programs.

A full concert on Halloween began the year. As the
curtain closed, Mr. Hardt mentioned . . . Christmas. Soon
the music was brought out and plans were made for the
annual Christmas concert.

Back from Christmas vacation, the musicians begin
working on the program for the spring tour. Early on
the morn of March 29. three busloads of students left

BASKETBALL

The Bluedevils opened the 1953-54 basketball
season by defeating Winona 55-49. This was a
Tilting start for an active season. With this in-
centive the team went on to tally several wins
before the season closed.

Play began with a team composed primarily
of returning cage veterans, who showed skill in
hall handling and defensive play. Before the
season had progressed very far, however, the
freshmen had taken over starting positions,

with the exception of forward Tom Stewart.
These men displayed speed and sharp-shooting
skill as they did their best to give a good show
for the Stout audience.

The season ended with the Stout quintet hold-
ing the tail end of a record with only three wins.
Several of the games were dropped by close
margins. With a large number of returning let-
termen next year, there is hope that the "elose
ones" can he turned into victories.

TENNIS

Stout is an active participant in ten-
nis, one of the fastest-moving summer
sports. The season was concluded with-
out a loss.

At the Hi-state meet in Minnesota the
team copped second place honors. Hill
Stern, playing first singles, was high
man at the meet.

The Bluedevil squad concluded its
play for the 1953 season at the state
meet. Hill Stern was chosen as player-
coach for 1954.

FOR STRENGTH IN TENNIS, A STRONG SERVE

GOLF

The most successful athletic team representing
Stout in '53 was the golf team. They captured six of
their meets, tied one, and lost only two.

The golfers really showed their form at the Hi-
state meet in Mankato. They took second place honors
and player-coach. Boh Takasaki, was medalist at this
meet. Bob also came second in individual honors at
the state meet.

BASEBALL

Stout played a fast schedule in their 1953
baseball season. Two games a week, many of
them double headers, made a rugged schedule
for the team.

Mankato hit the dust when the Stout nine

batted in their only win of the season.

Lettermen, Henderson, Kort, Beran and Shar-
key returned to spark the 1954 team. Other
veterans on the diamond are Noltner, Wills,
Ueda. and Houge.
